Summer Water Damage Tips

When you’ve been in the water damage restoration business for 35 years, there’s not much you haven’t seen. One of those is the all too common, coming home to a flooded home after a long vacation. A lot of people may think this sort of thing doesn’t really happen, and the worst part is that they definitely don’t prepare ahead of time as a potential issue.
Our SERVPRO of Richmond and SERVPRO of Henrico team wants you to prepare your home this summer to avoid water damage disasters. Check out this list of steps you can take:
- Clean your gutters - build up of gunk, leaf debris and other items could cause water to build up on your roof and eventually leak into your home.
- Direct downspouts away from the house - if not properly directed downhill or away from the foundation, rain water could collect and intrude into the basements or crawl space causing major issues
- Watch your water bill - if you notice a sudden increase in your bill, this could be a result of a leaking pipe
- Test your Sump Pump once a year - this is another major issue that we see all the time in this business. Make sure your sump pump is running properly to avoid flooded basements and backups
- Shut off the water for long vacations - it’s important to first know exactly where your water shut off is located in case of an emergency. If away from your house for weeks on end, make sure the water is off so there is zero chance of a flooded home.
